Sally and the Yoyos are on a mission to make our school a better place to learn and play. Over the past 2 weeks we have been researching, brainstorming and planning projects to carry out during Term 4 and beyond. There has been much excitement about the projects and how we can bring some of them to life. One of the projects Sally has been involved in is preparing one of the planting beds for seeding. We have decided that some pumpkins will take pride of place in some of the bed and the rest is to be decided.
There was lots of collaboration going on as tools and time we shared. It was hard work clearing many of the well established weeds but Sally persisted and worked hard to ensure the soil was ready for action. It will be exciting to observe developments in the coming weeks and to see if we can end up with a harvest of fruit and vegetables in the Summer / Autumn.
Sally has also had the chance to pitch his own project ideas about setting up a hair salon for learners come and enjoy/experience. Following a voting process, we will launch a variety of chosen projects over the coming weeks.

Here are some of the Team on a information finding mission around school, searching out the best place for projects to occur.
Following on from this, we see Sally getting involved in clearing the garden bed ready for planting.
The final result is a bed ready to produce next season’s harvest!

Sally needs to ensure her project ideas are followed up on and she has the confidence to take them from the page to an effective conclusion. She will then see and feel the value of completing a project that makes a difference to her school. This will in turn, help when moving onto his next idea as she will has the confidence of success behind her.

Learning Area: Science- Animals and their habitats. - Narrative Learning Story

Learning Observed

The focus during iExperience Week 3-6 was on animals and their habitats. Each learner needed to pick an animal and be able to provide key facts about it including its adaptations, characteristics, requirements for survival and why it is suited to its habitat. Sally could choose from several ways of presenting her information and she decided she wanted to “draw it”. She was very clear that she wanted to research about a bird but wasn’t sure the type of bird so we collaborated and we sat together looking at google images till she identified the one she was thinking of. It was a parrot. She collected information and made connections with it as she organised it using sub headings of animal habitat, animal description, food and survival. She didn’t quite finish the survival section. She used topic specific language. She included a sketch of her parrot and a sketch of its habitat. When she came to drawing a parrot she selected the Australian Galah. The colours she chose resembled the galah exactly showing how capable she was at representing her new learning. The scale of her bird to its habitat was fairly accurate.Sally managed her time well and was the first of all the learners to complete drawing her animal. She mounted it on black paper and I asked her to show the other learners how to mount their drawings as they finished. She accepted this responsibility and was joined by Jasonta. They collaborated so well together and related the information to the others. Sally was really proud of her finished drawing using coloured pencils. I regret I didn’t get to hear hear her do her presentation.the other learners wrote their feedback on postits for her.

Sally has spent a good deal of time in Term 3 researching birds. She was most interested in Cockatoos, parrots and Australian Galas. Sally created a range of work around these birds including a poem, slideshow and the presentation you can see in the photo below.
With support, Sally was able to share her learning and explain about habitats and how animals adapt to their environment.

Evidence of learning
Here we find a very rare species of ‘Sally’ perched on the chair and... sharing all her wonderful information about Cockatoos.
It was great to see and hear her sharing with a variety of learners and coaches.

Sally should now continue to develop confidence when presenting to others. She should apply her learning in this area and her research skills to finding out about other areas of curriculum interest.

A recent iExplore combined learning around the properties of baking soda and how we can apply this to a baking context. Sally made observations of the reaction that occurs between baking soda which is a base and vinegar which is an acid. She made predictions about what would happen and enjoyed seeing the chemical reaction occur as vinegary goodness shot into the air!
Sally then teamed up with Saniya, Aimee and Genevieve in a My Kitchen Rules Extravaganza, with teams pitting their wits against each other to produce the world’s greatest ‘Cake in a Cup.’ Sally was able to follow instructions and use creativity to make and decorate her masterpiece.
The end result was scientific understanding, real life application and a final dose of Yum! I can confirm that there was nothing left in the bowl at the end.

Voila! Chocolate cake a la Sally, and she even licked the bowl clean!
Well done Girls. You collaborated well and demonstrated that you are capable Masterchefs!

Sally is now encouraged to apply her learning of chemical reactions to find out other combinations that have interesting results. Through using iExplore, she has opportunity to take things to a deeper level of understanding and inquiry. Or she could apply for the next round of MKR and take the world by storm!
